Asphalt Calculator
Estimate hot-mix asphalt by weight for paving.
Enter your paving area and the compacted asphalt thickness to estimate the tons of hot-mix asphalt needed. Asphalt is sold by the ton, so the weight is the figure to order from.
How it works
Volume is area × depth (in feet). Hot-mix asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot, so tons = cubic feet × 145 ÷ 2,000. Driveways are commonly paved 2–3 inches thick over a compacted stone base.
Frequently asked questions
How much asphalt do I need?
Multiply area by thickness in feet for cubic feet, then multiply by 145 and divide by 2,000 for tons. A 20×10 ft area at 2 inches needs about 2.42 tons.
How much does asphalt weigh?
Hot-mix asphalt weighs roughly 145 lb per cubic foot, or about 2 tons per cubic yard.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
About 2–3 inches of compacted asphalt over 4 or more inches of compacted aggregate base for residential use.
