How it works

The side profile of a solid staircase is a stack of steps. Its cross-sectional area is rise × run × n(n+1)/2 (in feet), and the volume is that area times the stair width. A small waste allowance covers forming and overflow.

How much concrete do I need for stairs?
Use rise × run × n(n+1)/2 for the side profile area, then multiply by the width. A 3-step, 4-ft-wide staircase with 7-inch rises and 11-inch runs needs about 0.50 cubic yards.
Are poured concrete stairs solid?
This estimate assumes a solid pour on grade. Stairs formed over fill or with hollow cores use less concrete.
Should I add waste for concrete stairs?
Yes — around 5% covers form irregularities and overflow at the step edges.
