Drywall Calculator
Find how many drywall sheets a wall or ceiling needs.
Enter the total wall and ceiling area you're covering and pick your sheet size to get the number of drywall sheets, including a waste allowance for cuts and offcuts. 4×8 sheets are easiest to handle; 4×12 sheets mean fewer seams on long walls.
How it works
Sheets = area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area. A 4×8 sheet covers 32 sq ft and a 4×12 sheet covers 48 sq ft. A 10–15% waste allowance is normal to cover cuts around doors, windows, and outlets. Always round up to whole sheets.
Frequently asked questions
How many drywall sheets do I need?
Divide the total wall and ceiling area by the coverage of your sheet (32 sq ft for 4×8, 48 sq ft for 4×12), add 10–15% for waste, and round up. A 500 sq ft job needs about 18 sheets of 4×8.
What size drywall sheet is best?
4×8 sheets are easiest for one person to carry and hang. 4×12 sheets reduce the number of seams on long walls and ceilings but are heavier and harder to maneuver.
How much waste should I add for drywall?
Plan for 10–15%. More cuts around doors, windows, and outlets means more offcuts you can't reuse.
How many sheets of drywall for a 10×12 room?
About 17 sheets of 4×8 drywall: roughly 352 sq ft of wall (8-ft ceilings) plus a 120 sq ft ceiling, with 10% waste. Skip the ceiling and it's about 13 sheets.
