Roofing Calculator

Convert roof area to squares and shingle bundles.

Enter your total roof area (the actual sloped area, not the ground footprint) to get the number of roofing squares and shingle bundles, including a waste allowance for cuts, ridges, and valleys. If you only know the footprint, use the roof pitch calculator first to find the slope multiplier.

How it works

One roofing square equals 100 square feet. Most architectural shingles come three bundles to the square. Divide your roof area by 100 for squares, add waste, then multiply squares by 3 for bundles and round up.

Frequently asked questions

How many shingles do I need?
Divide your sloped roof area by 100 for squares, add 10% waste, then multiply by 3 for bundles. A 1,500 sq ft roof is about 16.5 squares, or roughly 50 bundles.
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles and roofing labor are commonly priced per square.
How much waste should I add for roofing?
About 10% for a simple gable roof, and 15% or more for roofs with many hips, valleys, and dormers.
Is this calculator free and private?
Yes. Every CubicCabin calculator runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you enter are never uploaded or stored. There's no sign-up, no limits, and it keeps working even if you lose connection after the page loads.
