Board Foot Calculator
Calculate board feet for lumber pricing and orders.
Enter a board's thickness, width, and length and how many pieces you have to get the total board footage — the unit hardwood and rough lumber are sold and priced in.
How it works
One board foot is 144 cubic inches of wood: a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 1 foot long. The shortcut is (thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet) ÷ 12, multiplied by the number of pieces.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate board feet?
Multiply thickness (in), width (in), and length (ft), then divide by 12. A 1×6 board 8 feet long is 4 board feet.
What is a board foot?
A board foot is 144 cubic inches of lumber — the volume of a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 1 foot long. Hardwood is usually priced per board foot.
Do I use nominal or actual size?
For rough lumber use the actual measured size. For surfaced lumber, board feet are typically figured from the nominal size.
