How it works
Studs equal the wall length (in inches) divided by the spacing, plus one for the end. A wall has three plate runs — one bottom plate and a doubled top plate — so plate lumber is roughly three times the wall length. 16-inch on-center is the most common spacing.

What is standard stud spacing?
