Stud Calculator

Count wall studs and plates by length and spacing.

Enter your wall length and choose the stud spacing to get the number of studs plus the linear feet of top and bottom plate lumber. Add extra studs for corners, T-intersections, and the king/jack studs around doors and windows.

How it works

Studs equal the wall length (in inches) divided by the spacing, plus one for the end. A wall has three plate runs — one bottom plate and a doubled top plate — so plate lumber is roughly three times the wall length. 16-inch on-center is the most common spacing.

Frequently asked questions

How many studs do I need?
Divide the wall length in inches by the spacing and add one for the end stud. A 20-ft wall at 16-inch spacing needs about 16 studs, before extras for corners and openings.
What is standard stud spacing?
16 inches on-center is standard for most walls; 24-inch on-center is allowed for some non-load-bearing and advanced-framing applications.
Does this include corners and openings?
No — add studs for each corner, T-intersection, and the king, jack, and cripple studs around doors and windows.
How many studs in an 8-foot wall?
Seven studs at 16-inch on-center spacing: 96 inches ÷ 16 = 6, plus one for the end. Add extras for corners and any door or window openings.
