Square Feet to Cubic Yards Calculator

Turn an area and depth into cubic yards of material.

Already know your area in square feet? Enter it with the depth you're filling to get the volume in cubic yards — the unit you order concrete, mulch, gravel, and soil in.

How it works

Multiply the area by the depth in feet (depth in inches ÷ 12) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. This skips the length × width step when you already have the square footage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to cubic yards?
Multiply the area by the depth in feet, then divide by 27. 100 sq ft at 4 inches deep is about 1.23 cubic yards.
Why do I need the depth?
Square feet measure area only. Volume — and therefore cubic yards — also depends on how deep the material is.
What's a common depth for mulch or gravel?
Mulch is usually 2–3 inches and gravel 2–4 inches; concrete slabs are commonly 4 inches.
Is this calculator free and private?
